Planted Forth, a collaboration with Felipe Rocio, suggests a machine designed to extract the soul of a yucca house-plant. A concrete and steel cage enframes, isolates, and anesthetizes this plant's vital essence, wondering whether anything more than superficial or instrumental relationships to living decorations are possible and whether humans are also affected by the enviornments we create.
Materials: ceramic, concrete, steel, HD projection onto double sided screen.
Installation views: Centro Commercial Invictus, group exhibition Preludio, 2019.
One side of the projection screen features representational footage of the original reference plant, conspicuously absent from the installation. The opposite shows the porous abstracted energy of the yucca mixing with its environment. The blurred distinction between natural and human-made materials is liberating, but the cold cement, bare ceramics, and metal frame the freedom of this dance in tragic irony.
